Should I take ballroom dancing?

2

I’m sixteen years old and I have a history in ballet. Where can I take it in Plano, Tx? I’m afraid I’d be in a class with all old people because I’m a beginner and all people my age would be really advanced… Also, how much would it cost? And would I take group type classes? Because I don’t want to take private lessons.

What your should do before your classical ballet class

0

Most classical ballet dancers know that although their ballet dancing class progresses slowly so that body is well warmed up before hitting the centre work, they will get a lot more out of their class if they arrive ten minutes early to warm up and stretch.  Ballet requires long, lean and strong muscles to facilitate ballet technique.  These same muscles that work so hard in ballet class can become tight, bunchy and overdeveloped if not properly stretched.  It is also easier to coax your body into ballet’s various positions without too much strain when your muscles are warm.

Warming up before class also prevents injury, especially those tiny niggly ones and small tears that are just serious enough to keep you from getting the most out of, and enjoying your classical ballet dancing class.

As humans we naturally want to practise what we can do well and avoid practicing what needs work.  Just look around you in a gym.  You often see the guy with the best biceps doing exercises for these same  muscles, or in dancing class, the best turners are practicing their pirouettes.  Yes it is good to be proud of what you do well, but you also have to overcome all those weaknesses.  In stretching this works the same, as we tend to stretch our more willing parts and avoid the muscles that tend to be stiffer.

You should never go straight into stretches before your body is warm, no mater how supple you are.  Start off warming up the body gently with gentle rises, ankle circles, shoulder rolls, etc.  Only once your body is warm is it appropriate to begin stretching.  Keep movements small and controlled rather than using ballistic bounces.  Avoid sudden forceful movements that can cause tears and strain.  Before class is definitely not the time to test out your full range of motion.  Transitions in and out of your stretches should also be slow and controlled.

Most importantly, listen to your body.  Anything that inflicts too much of the wrong type of pain is simply not worth doing – you will cry later on.  Stretching on your off days also contributes towards maintaining flexibility, and making your return to your ballet class so much easier.

Reasons Why You Should be Dancing Salsa Right Now

REASON WHY YOU SHOULD BE DANCING SALSA RIGHT NOW.

Salsa Dancing.  What is it that makes it popular today?  Why is it that people who salsa seems to be happier, in better shape and in a better mood compared to others?  From these questions we see that there are two major roles dancing salsa plays in people’s lives: they are healthier and they have a great social life.

We all know, having heard or read somewhere, about the health benefits of dancing.  Here are some of the more prominent ones to be considered:

·          It’s a great cardio activity that is fun; it’s a lot easier to spend three hours dancing than it is to spend forty five minutes on the treadmill.

·          You burn 450 calories per hour while dancing.  Isn’t that amazing?

·          Your balance and posture improves.

·          You loose weight.

·          Your flexibility increases.

·          It helps develop better circulation.

·          You will have better coordination.

·          You gain long-lasting energy as your metabolism increases.

It helps you work through or reduce other major health problems (e.g., depression).

So if these reasons alone aren’t enough to understand why people pick up salsa dancing, let’s analyze the social aspect of it.  We all come from different walks of life; some better than others, but for the most part the one thing people mutually seek is the feeling of being important, of having a purpose and belonging somewhere (e.g., to a community or group of people with common interests or goals). That is where dancing comes in: the means to a better end, building confidence and a sense of self that will drastically improve your quality of life. So how does salsa dancing help fulfill this ultimate goal?

Here it goes: Salsa dancing…

Inspires in you a positive attitude towards your daily life.

Okay, I understand that you don’t want to become the greatest dancer, but dancing helps shift and balance your mental state to a positive one. The best way to achieve this is by doing it often. Since dancing and the social contact uplift the spirit, if done regularly, it helps your life to become that way (positive, happier). Your daily activities become more pleasant as your overall mood is uplifted through dancing salsa. No wonder people say that dancing changes lives. I’ll say it better: “Dancing changes attitudes; positive attitudes change lives.”

Helps you to meet new friends. So here are a couple of questions for you: How many long-lasting friends did you make the last time you went to a social gathering? Or a bar (the bartender doesn’t count)?  Here is the answer: NONE. Salsa dancing is the perfect social ground for new friendships. You know why? Because from the go, you already know you both have something in common, something that you can talk about. You also get to dance face to face (no offense hip hop), and are able to exchange a small conversation as you dance. This contact is the perfect beginning for a more developed conversation, which usually involves more people. And guess what, these people also like salsa. Next logical step: Let’s get together to have a barbecue!

And from this the next common thing to happen is….dundundunduuuun….

You meet a special someone. How nice is the fact that you both love dancing and can share a favorite activity from the start?  Forget about the awkward first date, and think about that next time you go dancing! As a bonus, that person is likely well groomed and in great shape! Yahoo!

You increase your self-esteem and confidence.  If you are shy, this is the safest place to interact with people.  The salsa community is an open and extremely friendly one.  From the moment you walk in the door, you will feel welcomed – it’s that easy.  As you learn how to dance, you find yourself in a situation that is fun, open, and energizing.  Don’t forget about the exhilarating Latin music!  Watching yourself lose weight, learn how to move well on the dance floor, and constantly improve is an enormous boost in confidence!  As a girl, there’s nothing more satisfying than having guys constantly asking you to dance (and more!).  As a guy, being able to go up to the sexy girl you never would have dreamed of talking to and asking her to dance is an accomplishment that will change your world.  Now you will have the boldness and courage to ask any girl to dance, and to be the spotlight on the dance floor!  This sense of accomplishment and self-security is something that you will take with you from the salsa club into your daily life; you will be able to watch as the wonders that come from dancing salsa spread through your life, turning everything they touch to gold!

So here they are before you: the greatest reasons why people pick up salsa dancing, as their life-changing hobbies.  These are their reasons for doing it; what is your excuse not to?

All you have to do is sign up for any local salsa class (they are everywhere!), and you will thank me later when I’m in the crowd watching you tear it up on the dance floor.  Have a happy journey through the world of salsa dancing!

First time Ballroom dance class- what kind of shoes should I wear?

6

I am taking a beginner ballroom dancing class tonight, and they say on their website to wear shoes that don’t have rubber soles… what kind of shoes from the shoe store would be a good pair to buy and wear for tonight? I don’t want to invest in a high-quality pair of ballroom dancing shoes just yet, if I decide to not continue the lessons. Any ideas?

Dancing Should Be Fun

0

Dancing should be one of the most enjoyable things you can do. We’ve all had that moment where our favourite tune comes on the radio, we’re in our bedrooms and freak out in the craziest of dances.

But the moment people step into a dance class many people lose this feeling. Many people who go to dance classes on a regular basis obviously do enjoy it. But are they stopping themselves from enjoying it as much as they should?

The thing that most people are worried about in a dance class are making mistakes, looking out of place and having other people being able to see you dance. Of course when you’re thinking these things it’s hard to be able to fully enjoy yourself and your dancing.

What really needs to be done is to attend dance classes on a regular basis until you can kind of get used to the environment and gradually disassociate yourself away from these feelings. And try and enjoy yourself regardless in the class, treat it as you would treat a day out. You’re going out to have fun, not to necessarily perform everything you learn in the lesson perfectly.

I would even go as far as to say that it’s essential to enjoy yourself in dance class. We all learn much more effectively when we enjoy what we’re doing. It’s not all down to the teacher, it’s also down to the student and how they conduct themselves, their etiquette and how they approach and view the dance class.

Even if your goals in going to dance class are for fitness – which by the way is a great workout, it’s important to have fun! It’s easy to try and spend a few weeks getting fit but it takes either a high degree of discipline, otherwise a high level of enjoyment to continue a fitness regime beyond the initial spark that inspired you to get fit in the first place.

Achievement is very closely linked to how much you enjoy something. It is possible to achieve goals by pure commitment alone but then you’re missing out on the fun. If your goal is to have fun, achievement and improvement will often come naturally. Just think back to when you were at school and the subjects you were best at were probably the ones you enjoyed the most.

So really the goal of every class should be to make improvement. So even if you make many mistakes that’s an improvement in a sense because you know not to do it again. When your goals are just to do it for fun or to get better with every lesson then you WILL enjoy the class!

Top 5 reasons why dance teachers should teach online dance classes

0

Teaching online dance classes can bring a wealth of opportunity to dance teachers.

Teaching dance has traditionally been the solution for a dancer to earn regular income. A dance teacher however can only work part time without feeling completely exhausted. Whilst some dance teachers have established international workshops a majority are restricted to only teach in their communities relying on local regular students. With dance constantly in the media spotlight the growth of new dance schools has dramatically increased with many dance schools now facing fierce competition in their marketplace. If a dance teacher is injured they cannot work resulting in loss of income and face losing their students. Governments worldwide are introducing or have already enforced dance teaching qualification legislations forcing many unqualified but experienced dance teachers to seek an alternative career path.

Dance teachers problems can now be overcome simply by using the power of the Internet.

Reach an international student base

By offering online dance classes dance teachers are able to attract students to their online dance classes who may live 1000′s of miles away from them.

Earn passive income

A pre-recorded dance class video works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week earning a passive income for dance teachers.

Support existing dance school

Dance teachers can offer online dance lessons to support their existing dance schools by offering existing students an opportunity to learn from them at a time convenient to them so they can practise at home. A newbie might also want to try a dance teachers online dance class first before enrolling for onto a dance course of classes.

Tap into the shy learner market

For many shy learners, the thought of attending a class is embarrassing for them. Dance teachers can now tap into this market where they can learn in the privacy of their home.

No qualification needed

By teaching dance online, general teaching skills such as class management control and teaching strategies are not necessary. This means that both non-qualified and qualified dance teachers can teach online.

The internet is being revolutionised by video platform websites. With improved streaming video hosting technology it is now time for dance teachers to share their creativity with the world, earn passive income and attract opportunity by teaching and uploading an online dance video into an online dance studio.

Should You Go to Popular Dance Classes?

0

There are so many dance classes to choose from, how can you decide which dance class is for you? Should you go the popular dance classes with loads of people?

It can be tempting to choose the popular dance classes. After all if a lot of people go to them they must be good right? Well they usually are.

However, you should not determine which dance class is best for based solely on the class numbers. There can be any number of reasons why a dance class may be popular. It may be because the dance teacher is well known and has lots of dance industry contacts, perhaps there’s a good vibe, perhaps because the dance class is easy and people can do it, perhaps just because the choreography is amazing!

If a dance class is popular with professional dancers it’s probably either because they want to impress the choreographer who may have a high-profile in the industry or because it’s a style of dance which is popular in the dance industry at that time. Each dance teacher/ choreographer has their own style of dancing.

There are many good dance classes which have smaller numbers but with some very good dance teachers. The good thing about these dance classes is you don’t have to fight for space, will probably get a good view of the dance teacher and they can make more individual corrections (if they do this).

At the end of the day, you’ve got to choose dance classes which are best for you and what you’re aiming to achieve. If you want to catch the eye of the choreographer then by all means go to their dance class.

The advantage of going to popular dance classes is that you probably won’t be left too far behind with what’s happening in the industry. But you can build up skills that the other dancers in the popular dance class don’t have by going to other dance classes too. The downside is it can be hard to actually see the teacher when there are so many bodies in a room!

You can also get a good idea of you current standard and where you stand with all the dancers out there. The standard will probably be high, so you’ll have to become a better dancer – which of course is a good thing.

Also don’t fall into the trap of avoiding a dance class because it’s popular. If it’s popular there’s probably a reason why and if it’s a style of dance that is common in the dance industry you’ll want to learn it or you’ll get left behind.

Make your decisions based on where you’re going. It can never do any harm doing a popular dance class, but don’t think you should only go to the dance classes because they are popular.
