Dance Classes

In the modern world, there are fewer and fewer avenues open for real socialisation. More and more businesses and personal affairs are conducted over the internet or via teleconference. All of us need a little human interaction once in a while and more importantly, we all need to continually engage in the avenues that allow us to express our creativity.

As such, many people have hobbies that keep them busy. Many individuals enjoy collecting or caring for things such as cars, memorabilia, etc. But many of these hobbies still do address the issue of personal contact with other human beings! This is an aspect of our social lives that we must not let fall into neglect under any circumstances. After all, no man is an island.

Dance classes are one such activity that fulfils both our need for creativity as well as our desire to socialise with new people. Dance classes are filled with characters from all walks of life, and as such are a great opportunity for you to broaden your horizon. Dance Classes in Hong Kong – a guide to the best dance studios in Hong Kong

0

Hong Kong is a great place to come and live, and for many expats living abroad, taking up new hobbies is a way to meet people, build a social life and get out and see the country too.  So no surprise then that dancing is such a popular form of exercise. But where can you go to dance in Hong Kong and how are dance classes different in Hong Kong to the rest of the world?

The good news is, there are plenty of places to learn, whether you want to learn ballet, salsa, ballroom, hip hop or pole dance. The tricky part is finding them.

First of all, ask yourself why you want to take dance classes:

-          Is it to improve your already established dance skills?

-          Is it just to keep fit?

-          Do you want to meet people socially

-          Are you an aspiring professional dancer?

The answers will help you decide what kind of dance school you should be looking for.  You should also consider the target market of the dance studios you are looking at. Do they cater for older dancers, or are they focused on the teen market? Do they teach their classes in English (many are taught only in Cantonese)?

If you decide that you want to dance for social reasons and would prefer dances with partners, then consider Ceroc or Salsa classes, which often take place in bars and clubs rather than dance studios. If you’re feeling shy, there are  several dance studios that will offer you classes first. Perhaps take a private class, then head out to the bar to dance. There will be lots of people in your shoes, so just go for it.

If keeping fit and looking great is more your thing, try a street dance or hip hop class. If you want something more graceful, Jazz Funk is a good cross between Street dance and Jazz, and is very easy for beginners to pick up. With these classes, make sure that you use a dance school with age appropriate lessons.

Both StudioDanz and Ones to Watch offer teen focused classes with excellent teachers. For adult learners, try Central Dance Studios instead, where the demographic is older.

Adult classes in Ballet and more classical forms are harder to find taught in English. Both APA and Central Dance Studios offer classes for adult learners, from beginners upwards.

If you are into Ballroom and Latin, there are no end of clubs offering everything from the Waltz, to the Tango, Foxtrot to Mambo.  There are so many of these clubs that you should just try doing an internet search to see what comes up, and then base your school on location and the reputation of the teachers.

Once you’ve found a class, a good thing to do in Hong Kong is to buy coupons. Studios in Hong Kong often offer cheaper classes if you buy a block of 6 or 12 sessions, and few people pay on the day for classes. You can save as much as 20% on bookings this way, and remember, payment equals commitment, and you’ll find you stick at it much longer and improve much quicker this way.

Most of all, enjoy your classes – don’t be afraid to try a new studio, you can always call them first to check them out, or go and visit and ask if you can watch the class. Enjoy your dancing in Hong Kong.

Elle Kealy is a professional dancer and instructor. She runs an international dance company, Creation Dance, which specialises in teaching adult beginners urban dance and jazz. She runs Central Dance Studios in Hong Kong, a dance studio with a range of dance lessons for every age and ability.

What Type Of Street Dance Classes Are There In London?

0

It seems that street dance is becoming more and more popular in the UK. Lots of dance styles have had their turn in the spotlight over the years and it looks like it is the turn of street dance at the moment.

But what exactly is street dance? And what can you expect to learn in a street dance class in London? The London scene is very different to many other countries and it’s worth exploring.

Street dance classes often teach street dance routines which loosely take dance moves from a variety of dance styles which may include hip-hop dance, locking, popping, street jazz and jazz amongst others. It can also include acrobatics when danced in dance troupes and can fuse with other styles very different from street dance such as contemporary too.

In fact looking at the term more closely, ‘street dance’ is more an umbrella term encompassing all these dance styles and many more. Different people have different opinions on what constitutes street dance. For example some people would also put dance styles such as the breakin’ and the crip walk under the street dance categories whilst others would not.

So if you see a dance class advertised as street dance you can expect to learn dance routines which are very similar to hip-hop dance and including elements of the other styles, but not necessarily to hip-hop music. Whereas most of the time a hip-hop dance class will have routines to hip-hop or R&B music for the most part.

There are other clues for what you might expect form a street dance class in London. Sometimes ‘street’ will be followed by another name. For example ‘street jazz’ would combine street and jazz, ‘street locking’ would be lockin’ and ‘street urban’ would be similar to hip hop dance or urban dance.

The term ‘street dance’ is popularly used in the UK and a number of other countries. So if you decide that you want to start going to some street dance classes it’s helpful to know what style of street dance you want to learn.

Dance styles which might fall under the street dance category such as popping, locking and hip-hop dance will often have dance classes which are just called by their names instead of ‘street’ something.

If in doubt about a street dance class in London, take a class so you can find out whether it’s general routines you’ll be learning or a specific street dance style. Many times you’ll find you’ll enjoy a dance style that you weren’t even planning to learn!

Are Beginners Dance Classes Really Suitable For Beginners?

0

A beginner’s dance class can have a funny feel to it. There are the dancers who’ve been there for months and seem like pros. And then there are always the first-timers and you can feel their nervousness in the air.

When walking into a beginners dance class for the first time it can take the warm-up to really settle and start to feel more comfortable inside the class. Sometimes you won’t even be able to do the warm-up and wonder how you’re gonna cope once the dancing actually starts!

The good thing is that most dance teachers are quite sympathetic especially in their beginners dance classes. They’ll spend a lot of time breaking down the moves and going through things with enough time and repetition to make sure you get it.

Many times there’ll be parts of the dance routine that you won’t be able to do perfectly. At these points a beginner can become a bit discouraged and think they’re useless when they’re really not.

If a beginner takes a class and struggles to get most of the moves they’ll walk away either thinking they’re completely useless or that the class wasn’t for beginners. This is a misconception. Very few dancers can just go into a dance class and get it perfectly if they’ve danced for months let alone in their first class.

Also a beginner’s class is not meant for dancers in the class to be able to get it perfectly at first attempt. It is meant to cover quite a lot of material so that a beginner can become a better dancer. Also if you ever watch an elementary or intermediate dance class you’ll notice that it can be quite complicated and fast.

The beginners class needs to provide some sort of preparation for that next level so that a dancer who wants to progress to higher levels will have the opportunity. A beginners class should cover the basics, the foundations upon which everything else can be built.

It can help to think of piano grades or belts in martial arts. You can’t expect to be able to play a grade 1 exam piece on a musical instrument at your first practise session. Grade 1 may be the lowest grade but once you’ve achieved that grade you can already play a bit.

With dance classes, once you can successfully pull off the moves and routines in a beginners dance class you can dance a bit. So go start your dance classes and when you come to bits you can’t do, realise what a good dancer you will be when you can and practise till perfect!

Should You Go to Popular Dance Classes?

0

There are so many dance classes to choose from, how can you decide which dance class is for you? Should you go the popular dance classes with loads of people?

It can be tempting to choose the popular dance classes. After all if a lot of people go to them they must be good right? Well they usually are.

However, you should not determine which dance class is best for based solely on the class numbers. There can be any number of reasons why a dance class may be popular. It may be because the dance teacher is well known and has lots of dance industry contacts, perhaps there’s a good vibe, perhaps because the dance class is easy and people can do it, perhaps just because the choreography is amazing!

If a dance class is popular with professional dancers it’s probably either because they want to impress the choreographer who may have a high-profile in the industry or because it’s a style of dance which is popular in the dance industry at that time. Each dance teacher/ choreographer has their own style of dancing.

There are many good dance classes which have smaller numbers but with some very good dance teachers. The good thing about these dance classes is you don’t have to fight for space, will probably get a good view of the dance teacher and they can make more individual corrections (if they do this).

At the end of the day, you’ve got to choose dance classes which are best for you and what you’re aiming to achieve. If you want to catch the eye of the choreographer then by all means go to their dance class.

The advantage of going to popular dance classes is that you probably won’t be left too far behind with what’s happening in the industry. But you can build up skills that the other dancers in the popular dance class don’t have by going to other dance classes too. The downside is it can be hard to actually see the teacher when there are so many bodies in a room!

You can also get a good idea of you current standard and where you stand with all the dancers out there. The standard will probably be high, so you’ll have to become a better dancer – which of course is a good thing.

Also don’t fall into the trap of avoiding a dance class because it’s popular. If it’s popular there’s probably a reason why and if it’s a style of dance that is common in the dance industry you’ll want to learn it or you’ll get left behind.

Make your decisions based on where you’re going. It can never do any harm doing a popular dance class, but don’t think you should only go to the dance classes because they are popular.

10 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Dance Classes

0

Once you’ve started your first dance class, it can become an addictive activity and it can become a regular part of your schedule. As well as being fun and a great form of fitness it’s great to learn to be able to dance properly like the professionals as well.

Most of the time you will not be told how to make the most out of your dance classes, and as a result many people neglect things which can help them a lot with their dancing. Whereas if you learn HOW to learn and know what things in a dance class you should be paying attention to you can make your learning more effective.

Here are the things which you should be doing in your dance classes to get the most out of them and make the most progress:

1. Treat your dance classes as ‘me’ time and something you do for yourself. The more you have fun in the dance classes and enjoy yourself, the easier it is for your brain to learn, and besides it’s much more fun!

2. Listen to what the dance teacher says, don’t just copy them. Many times their words can describe the exact feel of the moves which can be hard to decipher by just watching.

3. Don’t feel it’s the end of the world if things are not going perfectly. Dance classes can be difficult at times and will stretch you – this is a good thing. If you treat each challenge as something you can master with practise, things can seem a lot less daunting.

4. Try and look exactly like the dance teacher. This includes the exact shapes they are making with their body, hand and feet, body angle, lines, tempo, rhythm and anything else you can pick up on!

5. Perform dance moves full out as much as you can.

6. Breathe while you dance, don’t hold your breath!

7. Don’t take short cuts. If the teacher shows you the way to do a move, it might seem like a lot of hard work but there’ll be a reason they’ll be teaching you to do things a certain way.

8. Every dance class and dance style is different. Try and learn every new style as it is without ‘flavouring’ it with other things you may have learnt in the past. Learn to do it their way. Doing things your way is a separate skill.

9. Focus on what you’re doing well, not your shortcomings. Instead practise your weaknesses instead of dwelling upon them.

10. Practise can make perfect (sometimes)!

Are There Any Boys Only Dance Classes?

0

When doing any new activity or embarking on a new journey it’s always nice to see people we can relate to or that are similar to us. Which is why boys and men are always more keen to go to dance classes if they know they won’t be the only male in the room.

Sadly I’ve never heard of a boys-only dance class and even if they do exist they would be the exception rather than the rule. I have seen a few dance classes for girls-only but these are very sensual classes which explore femininity through movement. I doubt there are any such classes for men!

Which means that if you’re a boy, you’ll have to go to dance classes with women in it as well as another men. Unless of course you go down the route of private dance classes where you can learn 1 to 1 with a dance teacher.

So if you can’t dance and you’re a man is it really any more embarrassing having other females see it as well as men? Well no not really, if anything women respect a man that tries.

Even if you’re useless at dancing, by going to dance classes you show that you’re trying to do something about it. Everyone who’s ever been to a dance class knows that there’s a learning curve and you won’t look good straight away. You have to look bad before you can look good.

The fact that there are other women in the class should not be seen as a bad thing. You’ll often find that they’re not necessarily better at dance classes than the men, the men may even be better in some cases.

At the end of the day, dance is cross-gender and something we’re all free to explore and enjoy. If you’re a man you’ll almost certainly find that there’ll be other men in the class if the dance class is bigger than about 10 people. Even if you’re the only male that shouldn’t matter, if you want to learn it you have to learn to ignore these minor details.

Dancing is something a lot of people are self-conscious about and you can bet that the other people in the class will be far more worried about how they are looking than to be too concerned about what you’re doing.

So go on and take the leap, find a class that you think you’ll enjoy and then walk in. If there’s other men then great, if not then you can be the man to change that!
