BZ Class – April Rodriguez Group 1
20
April Joy Rodriguez began dancing Hula at age 7 in the city of Carson, California. It wasn’t until the age of 18 though, that April took her first Hip Hop class. Her early training began with SuperDave Royster and Jayson Wright. With their mentorship, she began to develop a deep love for soul, groove, and dance. In her first year of college, April was introduced to the Boogiezone community through competing with Kaba Modern. Since then, she’s danced with various choreographers for different projects. Choreographers include: Jay Chris Moore, Jason Bueno, Jed Florano, and Jun Quemado. Although living miles away from San Diego, California, she also trained with SuperGalactic Beat Manipulators under the directorship of KJ Gonzales, Ben Chung, Lando Wilkins, and Kevin Brewer. At 22 years old, she now dances for Gigi Torres, alongside other powerhouses, in an all-female group called “Essence Dance Company,” where they focus on showcasing their strength as women and hope to become positive symbols to others in that way. Within this summer, April taught workshops with Essence ladies Audrey Benson, Aimee Lucas, Candace Brown, and also with Funkanometry SF ladies Mariel Martin, and Ellen Kim in different cities such as San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Tempe, Arizona. “Apes” feels very blessed to be surrounded by passionate teachers, as she believes she’s in the beginning stages of her dancing career. There is still much to learn. She would like to thank everyone she’s worked with …

MEET JAQUEL KNIGHT Born in North Carolina, but raised in Atlanta, GA, JaQuel has been dancing passionately since the age of 2. Beginning his formal dance training at the age of 14 with instructors such as Chuck Maldonado, Dave Scott, Brian Friedman and Shane Sparks, JaQuel soon realized that he wanted his passion to become a career. Moving to Los Angeles directly after graduating from high school, he began his journey to becoming a professional dancer and choreographer. From there he went on to work with artist like Janet Jackson, Gnarls Barkley, DJ UNK and Soulja Boy and with choreographers Michael Rooney, Richard Jackson, and Miss Prissy. Then on to assist choreographers like Chuck Maldonado, Jae Blaze and Frank Gaston. Those opportunities resulted in choreographing the single and promo tour of We Break The Dawn for recording artist Michelle Williams, of Destiny’s Child, and the single Corazón (You’re Not Alone) for Latina Pop group, Prima J. Months later, JaQuel received a phone call from Frank Gatson, who had previously discovered his great choreography ability while working with Michelle Williams, to come in and choreograph Beyoncé new video for the single, Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It). MEET TOYBOX Jonathan Bronner.. (AKA).. Toybox was born in Pomona, California in 1986. He was introduced to raves and underground house music parties at the age of 17. Toybox was inspired by the dancers at these events and fell in love with the music and house dance right away. After a year of practicing only house, Toybox then decided to try something new, choreography. Joining teams such as Groove57(GRV), Common Ground, Mavyn, Chill Factor and Team Millennia, heexpanded his knowledge not only in house dance but in staging, performance, teaching and Hip-Hop. From that point on Toybox knew he wanted to take things to another level. After graduating High School, Toybox then spent two years training(developing his style) and choreographing for several teams in the dance community. Toybox’s choreography began to stand out at numerous dance shows and could be described as something new/different and refreshing! He now currently dances on Team Millennia as a freshmen and plans to further his dancing skills. Toybox’s house-influenced choreography has opened many teaching opportunities for him to pursue his dancing career. TB is eager to help better others as well as himself to become a stronger person as well as a stronger dancer. DISCLAIMER: For Inspirational purposes only.
